Peterborough Media Release

You would have noticed the amazing transformations of our beautiful heritage buildings currently happening along the north side of Peterborough’s Main Street. The aim of the Main Street renewal project is to improve the overall visual appeal and utilisation of the Main Street while still maintaining the historical character and feel of the street. The renewal project will also further increase Peterborough’s appeal to tourists and hopefully entice them to stop, stay and spend and see all the exciting things Peterborough has to offer.

The renewal project has a number of different parts that you might not be aware of, these include:
- Undergrounding of power lines between Meadows Street and High Street to improve the streetscape visually, but also significantly improve the safety of the area for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
- Restoration and painting of Main Street building facades and parapets to enhance the beauty of the historic architecture.
- The installation of five shared-use outdoor dining protuberances to encourage residents and visitors to stop and enjoy the revitalised Main Street.
- Development of free wireless broadband internet (Wi-Fi) along the Main Street to promote people stopping and enjoying the town and potentially accessing local tourism information to see regional sites and activities.
Construction is ongoing and being undertaken by three local contractors Chambers Building Services, 4K Construction and John Schofield and Son. Say hello as you walk by!
It is anticipated the project will be completed by August 2017. This project represents a significant step forward for the town and demonstrates Council’s, RDA’s, State Government’s and the community’s ongoing commitment to its future.
