Position Overview:
The Leading Hand is responsible for overseeing daily operations at Augusta Quarries, with a primary focus on crusher operation and production. This role requires a hands-on individual with extensive experience in quarry operations, especially in crusher management, to ensure the effective, safe, and efficient running of the quarry. The Leading Hand will act as a team leader, coordinating with site personnel to meet production targets while maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Operations Management:
    • Lead the daily operations of the quarry, including the operation and maintenance of the crusher and associated equipment.
    • Assist the Quarry Manager in planning and coordinating production activities to meet output targets.
    • Monitor and ensure the optimal performance of the crushing plant, including setting up and adjusting equipment as necessary.
    • Supervise material processing, ensuring that the correct products are produced to the required specifications.
  2. Team Leadership:
    • Provide direction and support to quarry staff, including operators, labourers, and maintenance personnel.
    • Coordinate and delegate tasks among team members to ensure efficient workflow and production.
    • Mentor and train team members on equipment operation, maintenance, and safety procedures.
  3. Maintenance:
    • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of the crusher and other equipment to ensure they are in safe and optimal working condition.
    • Troubleshoot and carry out minor repairs on crushing and screening equipment as needed.
    • Liaise with maintenance teams to schedule major repairs and maintenance activities.
  4. Health & Safety:
    • Promote and enforce a culture of safety, ensuring that all team members comply with Augusta Quarries’ safety policies and procedures.
    • Conduct regular safety briefings and toolbox talks with team members.
    • Identify and address potential hazards, implementing corrective actions to mitigate risks.
    • Maintain accurate records of safety incidents, near misses, and maintenance activities.
  5. Compliance & Reporting:
    • Ensure that all operations comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations, as well as company policies.
    • Assist in maintaining documentation and records related to production, maintenance, safety, and equipment inspections.
    • Provide regular operational reports to the Quarry Manager, highlighting production achievements, challenges, and areas for improvement.
  6. Continuous Improvement:
    • Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance productivity and reduce costs.
    • Implement best practices in quarry and crusher operation to maximize efficiency and output.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Proven experience in quarry operations, with a strong focus on crusher operation and maintenance.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or leading hand role within the quarrying, mining, or construction industries.
  • Strong knowledge of crushing and screening equipment, including maintenance procedures.
  • Excellent understanding of safety regulations and best practices in quarry operations.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and carry out basic equipment repairs.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • Current driver’s license and relevant tickets/certifications (e.g., front-end loader, excavator, crusher operation) are highly desirable.
